Bengals reportedly passed on 2nd-round pick for McCarron

Unless the Cincinnati Bengals get an incredible haul for AJ McCarron, it appears their backup quarterback won't be going anywhere.

On the heels of the Denver Broncos denying any interest in dealing for the signal-caller, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated indicated Thursday the Bengals could have gotten a second-round pick for McCarron earlier in the offseason but passed.

The news shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, since reports in April noted Cincy wanted at least a first-round pick for McCarron.

A capable backup quarterback is never a bad thing to have, and McCarron carried himself admirably in 2015 when he was called into action for four starts in place of the injured Andy Dalton.

McCarron is entering the final year of his rookie deal and it appears he may have to wait until he becomes a free agent to try his luck at being a starter somewhere else, though it remains unclear when that will be. The 26-year-old spent 13 games on the non-football injury list as a rookie, so the Bengals contend he should not be an unrestricted free agent until 2018.
