Spieth begins Grand Slam quest with 1st-round 72 at PGA

Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports

Jordan Spieth's attempt to become the sixth player to accomplish the career Grand Slam began with a first-round 72 at the PGA Championship.

"I thought tee to green it was pretty solid," Spieth told Amanda Balionis of TNT following Thursday's round. "It was really just on the greens for me, I had three three-putts. I didn't have easy putts, but my speed control was just a little off today."

Beginning his round at the par-5 10th, the 24-year-old parred his opening two holes, before making a beautiful two-putt par at the par-4 12th from 71 feet.

Spieth would trim his first stroke at the par-5 15th, before throwing it back with a bogey at the 16th, and would make the turn in even-par 36. The world No. 2 would drop three shots early in his final nine, bogeying Nos. 1, 5, and 6, but would rally late with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 7 and 8.

Spieth would par his final hole of day for a 1-over par round, finding 10 fairways and 12 greens in regulation, while recording 1.833 putts per GIR.

"It was a day that really should have been a couple under (par) and was 1-over. So a bit frustrating with that, but I was at 3-over and brought it back 2-under over the last three....so at least a chance going forward."

The Texan will tee off the first hole Friday at 1:35 p.m. ET with Sergio Garcia and Brooks Koepka.
