Stanford names Keller Chryst starting QB to open season

Keller Chryst may not have known how his future in football would play out as he left the field on a cart with a torn ACL in last year's Sun Bowl, but the last eight months have led him right back to the starter's job for Stanford.

Cardinal head coach David Shaw announced Tuesday that Chryst will be the starting quarterback when Stanford opens its season across the pond in Australia against Rice, according to Everett Cook of The San Francisco Chronicle.

Shaw expressed confidence in the senior and said he hasn't seen anything to lead him to go in another direction.

“We feel pretty good about that,” Shaw said. “He’s shown us no signs of any issues at all physically, there are no limitations on him right now, so we feel good about him getting ready to go play in Sydney."

“He’s been able to drive off it since Day 1,” Shaw said of Chryst's repaired right knee. “There have been no issues, no setbacks. He’s been doing really, really well. We’re excited about where he is.”

After two weeks of camp, Chryst admits that he's still getting into the thick of things, but expects to be fully ready when the regular season begins on Aug. 26.

“I'm still shaking some rust, but that should come off soon,” Chryst said Sunday.
