Yankees place Sabathia on DL with right knee inflammation

Dan Hamilton / USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees have placed veteran starter CC Sabathia on the 10-day disabled list and recalled left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery from Triple-A.

In his most recent outing, Sabathia lasted just three innings against the Toronto Blue Jays, giving up four runs - all earned - on six hits including a pair of homers.

Following the game, Sabathia underwent an MRI on his knee that revealed no structural damage, but the injury is still enough to keep the 37-year-old off the 25-man roster for the time being.

In 19 starts this season, Sabathia has managed a 4.05 ERA and 4.58 FIP.

Montgomery is slated to start Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, and will presumably take Sabathia's place in the rotation.

In 115 2/3 innings with the big club this year - more than Sabathia - the 24-year-old has posted an identical ERA to Sabathia, though has the better peripherals with a 3.95 FIP.
