Indians place Brantley on DL with ankle injury

David Richard / USA TODAY Sports

After leaving Tuesday night's game against the Colorado Rockies in the fifth inning, the Cleveland Indians' Michael Brantley was placed on the 10-day disabled list.

Indians manager Terry Francona had indicated Wednesday morning that moving Brantley to the disabled list wasn't in the immediate plans, instead electing to see how the 30-year-old outfielder responded to treatment.

In his place, the Indians promoted utility player Erik Gonzalez from Triple-A. In 39 games in the majors this season, the 25-year-old has posted a .263/.272/.400 slash line while playing second base, third base, shortstop, and left field.

Brantley, who sat out almost all of 2016 with a shoulder injury, has played 88 games with the Indians this season with an .802 OPS.
