Mariners acquire Alonso from A's

The surging Seattle Mariners bolstered their lineup Sunday for the stretch run, acquiring first baseman Yonder Alonso from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor-league outfielder Boog Powell.

Now just 1 1/2 games back of the second American League wild-card spot, the Mariners claimed Alonso on revocable waivers earlier this week, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, and were able to work out a trade with the Athletics, who were keen to give rookie Matt Olson more playing time at first base.

Alonso, one of the most bandied about names leading up to Monday's non-waiver trade deadline, will now slot in as Seattle's primary first baseman, displacing Danny Valencia, who will likely now start only against left-handed pitchers. A newly-minted All-Star, Alonso posted an .896 OPS (142 OPS+) with a career-high 22 homers and 17 doubles through 100 games with Oakland this season.

Alonso, who's owed roughly another $1.82 million in 2017, is a free agent this winter.

"Wow," Alonso wrote in a statement on Twitter. "First I would like to thank this incredible organization The Oakland Athletics. They brought me here 2 years ago and opened the doors for me and my family to play and perform at a high level every single day."

Powell, meanwhile, will now reunite with the organization that selected him in the 20th round of the 2012 amateur draft. This year, the 24-year-old has played mostly for the Mariners' affiliate in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, hitting .340/.416/.490 in 68 games, though Powell has also spent a bit of time in Seattle, managing a .504 OPS in two brief stints with the major-league club
