Red Sox backing Price off rehab due to 'general soreness'

Boston Red Sox left-hander David Price suffered a minor setback in his rehab from elbow inflammation as the club backed him off from throwing Friday.

"There's still some general soreness that feels like he still needs some additional time and treatment to address," manager John Farrell told reporters, according to Christopher Smith of MassLive.com.

Farrell went on to classify Price's situation as day to day.

Price, who last threw Wednesday from flat ground, was placed on the 10-day disabled list July 28 with inflammation in his pitching elbow - the same elbow he injured in March that kept him out for the first two months of the regular season.

The five-time All-Star was optimistic in the days after being placed on the DL, saying his current elbow injury is nowhere near as serious as the first one, though he wasn't prepared to predict a timeline for a potential return.

"I have to say it will be more than 10 days," Price said last week. "I'll play catch. We did all the strength tests and grip tests and my strength and my grip were both stronger than they were in spring training. All the signs are really good. I'm going to take it a day at a time and take care of it."
