Wichita State star Shamet breaks foot, start of season in jeopardy

Wichita State guard Landry Shamet revealed Saturday that he'll be on the shelf for the next 12-to-16 weeks as he recovers from a stress fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. Shamet, considered an All-American candidate heading into 2017-18, was the minutes leader on the squad which finished the season ranked No. 19 in the AP Poll.

"I think, based on my X-Rays and MRIs, it's new, but when I rolled my ankle I enflamed it and aggravated it, which led to more discomfort," Shamet told CBS Sports' Matt Norlander.

The injury occurred July 21 while Shamet was participating in the Under Armour All-America Camp.

While the recovery timeline suggests that Shamet could theoretically be back in time for the Shockers' season opener on Nov. 10, it wouldn't be surprising to see the program take a conservative approach, as this is the Kansas City native's second major foot injury since 2015. Shamet played just three games in the 2015-16 season after suffering a compound stress fracture in his left foot.

Shamet averaged 11.4 points, 3.3 assists, and 2.8 rebounds in 36 appearances last season, helping lift the 10-seed Shockers to a Round of 64 upset over Dayton in the NCAA tournament before falling to Kentucky in the next round. In that season-ending loss, Shamet recorded 20 points, two assists, and two rebounds.
