Report: Twins will consider trading Santana, Garcia if losses continue

Brad Rempel / USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Twins' status as buyers could be short lived.

Losers of three in a row and four of their last five, the Twins have fallen 4 1/2 games back in the division and will reportedly consider trading Ervin Santana and Jaime Garcia should their struggles continue, sources told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Santana was one of the best starters in the majors over the first two months of the season, going 7-2 with a 1.75 ERA in 11 starts. The right-hander hasn't been nearly as dominant over his last nine outings, however, going 4-5 with a 5.47 ERA while allowing 13 home runs. He's owed $13.5 million next season, and also has a $14-million team option in 2019.

Garcia, meanwhile, was just acquired from the Atlanta Braves on Monday and has yet to make a start for the Twins. As many as six teams were reportedly interested in the left-hander and Minnesota could flip him prior to the deadline if they feel they're out of the race.
