Arizona State's Todd Graham says he didn't deserve contract extension

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

Todd Graham was used to getting contract extensions at Arizona State, but a pair of losing seasons have given him a wake-up call.

The Sun Devils head coach didn't receive a one-year extension this offseason for the first time in his five-year tenure, which the 52-year-old understands.

"If you're 5-7, I don't think you should get an extension," Graham told Doug Haller of Azcentral sports. "We're in the performance business."

Graham finished 5-7 and 6-7 respectively over the past two campaigns, after winning 10 games in both 2013 and 2014. The problem wasn't as much the record, but how his team finished.

Arizona State lost its last six games by a combined score of 280-162, spoiling what was once a promising season. If Graham posts another losing year in 2017, expect his seat to become very hot in Tempe.
