Jim Harbaugh declared Michigan's quarterback competition open Tuesday, saying returning starter Wilton Speight won't enter fall camp with an upper hand to retain his place atop the depth chart.

"Wilton's in a good spot," Harbaugh said at Big Ten Media Days, according to Nick Baumgardner of MLive. "He's tied for first with John O'Korn and Brandon Peters."

Speight led the huddle last year after winning the starting job out of camp. He struggled at times versus better competition throughout the season, though, and was outshined in Michigan's spring scrimmage by Peters, a redshirt freshman.

"It'll take anywhere from eight to 15 practices to figure out," Harbaugh said of a timeline for determining who'll start the Wolverines' opener versus Florida.

Speight, who'll be a senior in 2017, threw for 2,538 yards and 18 touchdowns with seven interceptions a season ago.
