Report: Brewers 'digging into possibility' of trade for Kinsler

The Milwaukee Brewers' front office could be looking to add reinforcements leading up to the non-waiver trade deadline as the club has watched its lead in the National League Central shrink to just one game.

Already having been linked to Detroit Tigers starter Justin Verlander and left-handed reliever Justin Wilson, the Brewers are also "digging into the possibility" of acquiring Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.

Kinsler is in the midst of a bit of a down season, hitting .244/.324/.397 with nine home runs and 15 doubles in 78 games, but is currently enjoying a six-game hitting streak in which he's collected five extra-base hits.

The Brewers rank 22nd in the majors in OPS from second base, as Jonathan Villar has struggled to a .223/.287/.350 line to go with 100 strikeouts and just 27 walks in 300 at-bats. Villar's speed and ability to play multiple positions could turn him into a valuable bench piece should the Brewers land the reigning Gold Glove winner in Kinsler.

Detroit is trying to sell off many of its veteran pieces in an effort to clear salary and rebuild a dismal farm system, while the Brewers own a number of solid prospects.

Kinsler would come with a $12-million team option ($5-million buyout) for next season, and does possess a limited no-trade list that includes 10 clubs, though it's not known if the Brewers are on it.
