'Bones' Mackay says 62 is possible Saturday at Royal Birkdale
After the field played in brutal weather at Royal Birkdale on Friday, those who made the 36-hole Open Championship cut are experiencing much friendlier conditions in the the third round Saturday.
A soft golf course and very little wind are producing a lot of birdies, and Phil Mickelson's former caddie, Jim "Bones" Mackay, believes history could be made by day's end.
"Well, obviously we've seen all kinds of weather," Mackay, who's doing on-course commentating, told Dan Hicks of the Golf Channel. "We've seen rain, we almost saw some sleet yesterday, I thought, and some sunshine the first day. And I got to tell you, don't tell Johnny (Miller) I said this, but there's a 62 out there today."
The single-round scoring record at a major championship is 63, and Miller is one of 31 players to accomplish the feat. The NBC commentator famously fired a final-round 63 at the 1973 U.S. Open en route to victory, and was vocal last month at Erin Hills when Justin Thomas broke Miller's record for the best single round in relation to par.
Shaun Norris, who was the first player out on Saturday, fired a 5-under-par 65.
