Zouma heads to Stoke on loan after signing new Chelsea contract

Just like Tammy Abraham before him, Kurt Zouma signed a new contract at Chelsea before being sent out on loan for the 2017-18 season.

The imposing defender moved on a temporary stint to Stoke City on Friday, but is safeguarded by his parent club with fresh terms that run until June 2023.

Abraham completed a similar double deal earlier in July, agreeing a new five-year contract with the Blues before joining Swansea City on a season-long loan.

"It is fantastic Kurt has chosen to commit his future to Chelsea. He has shown his talent since joining us three years ago, and has returned from a serious injury with a fantastic attitude," said club technical director Michael Emenalo.

"Now he has the opportunity to play regularly in the Premier League and we will be monitoring his progress closely while he is at Stoke."

The Saint-Etienne product was beginning to stake a claim in Chelsea's starting lineup before a cruciate ligament rupture in February 2016 put him out of action for over nine months. He's a player of remarkable presence in the backline - especially for a 22-year-old - and should ease into the gulf left by Bruno Martins Indi's return to FC Porto after a loan spell.

Stoke is currently undergoing pre-season preparations in France ahead of a friendly against recently promoted Ligue 1 side Amiens SC on Saturday. The Potters' first match of the Premier League campaign is against Everton at Goodison Park on Aug. 12.
