Warriors to sell personal seat licenses

The Golden State Warriors are the hottest ticket in the NBA, and the organization is capitalizing on that as it looks ahead to a new arena.

Golden State will charge fans a fee for the right to purchase season tickets at the privately funded, $1-billion Chase Center, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell. The arena is scheduled to open in 2019.

It's unclear how much the seat licenses will cost, but the Warriors plan to hold the fee for 30 years before returning it to the license owner. They'll become the second NBA team to sell seat licenses, though the practice is common in the NFL. The Toronto Raptors were the first NBA team to offer licenses, although they also included rights for the Toronto Maple Leafs and were for a limited number of top-end seats.

The Warriors plan to sell 12,000 season tickets, half of which will be priced at $15,000 or less, a team official told Rovell.

Licenses can be resold, but not for more than the original price minus the years used, Rovell notes. If the resale price is lower, the Warriors will make up the difference to the original owner, but only at the end of the 30-year term. The team is also planning to allow fans to pay for licenses in installments.

The Chase Center is located in downtown San Francisco.
