Report: Indians scouting Giants' Nunez

Andrew Villa / USA TODAY Sports

Now that the Chicago White Sox have dealt away Todd Frazier to the New York Yankees, teams looking to add a third baseman are forced to turn their focus toward different options and the Cleveland Indians are scouting Eduardo Nunez as a potential option, according to a report from Buster Olney of ESPN.

Currently stationed with the last-place San Francisco Giants, Nunez is slashing .297/.322/.409 through 70 games. While Nunez has been stationed primarily at third base, the 30-year-old has also played at shortstop as well as both corner outfield spots this year.

Considering the Indians currently have Jose Ramirez at third base, they would likely rely on Nunez's positional flexibility in the event of acquiring him. Ramirez has been one of the best hitters in baseball this season, posting an impressive .322/.375/.580 slash line through 381 plate appearances.

The Indians are not alone in looking at Nunez, however. The Boston Red Sox - at one point believed to be the front-runner for Frazier - have also expressed interest in acquiring Nunez.

Interestingly, Nunez has been worth fractionally less WAR (0.9) than Frazier (1.1) this season despite lacking much slugging ability thanks, in most part, to savvy base-running. Nunez has just four home runs with a .113 ISO while the new Yankees third baseman has 16 homers and a .225 ISO.

Nunez avoided arbitration this past offseason with the Giants by signing a one-year deal worth $4.2 million. He will be eligible for free agency for the first time this upcoming offseason.
