Redick admits to spurning larger offer from Rockets to join 76ers

The Houston Rockets will be in title contention next season, have a stronger roster led by All-Stars Chris Paul and James Harden, and were able to offer more money than the Philadelphia 76ers.

So why did J.J. Redick elect to take his talents to The City of Brotherly Love and join the Sixers?

It's all about playing time.

"It wasn't about the money. Houston offered me more money than Philly. Total money," Redick said during the inaugural edition of his new podcast, "The Chronicles of Redick." I knew in Houston, I was going to come off the bench. Me and Eric Gordon do a lot of the same things ... It wasn't necessarily going to be what I wanted at this point in my career for the court part of it."

Philadelphia needed a proven shooter to slot into its inexperienced lineup that includes two No. 1 overall picks in Markelle Fultz and Ben Simmons, as well as the often-injured Joel Embiid. Redick certainly isn't getting shafted salary-wise either, making a cool $23 million for just one year's work.

It's hard to fault Redick for wanting to continue being a starter, as he came off the pine just once in his 266 appearances for the Los Angeles Clippers. He's 33 years old, and working under a one-year contract with a slew of young talent surrounding him, he'll be able to maximize his value as best he can with the 76ers and potentially cash in again next summer.
