Report: Mariners checking in with Giants, Padres about pitching help

Joe Nicholson / USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Mariners may be sticking to the West Coast in its pursuit of trade deadline reinforcements.

With a distinct need to bolster their starting rotation, the Mariners have apparently checked in with the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres about pitchers who could be available, according to Fox Sports' Jon Morosi.

That could mean any number of names from Giants starters Jeff Samardzija, Matt Moore, or Johnny Cueto - all of whom have been named in trade rumors - to virtually anyone on the Padres' pitching staff.

Seattle's rotation has combined for a 4.83 ERA and has seen almost every pitcher hit the disabled list at various times. Only Ariel Miranda has eclipsed 100 innings to date, and Drew Smyly never got a chance to step on a mound before undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Despite this, the Mariners are 47-48 and right in the thick of the wild-card race. As underwhelming as the first half was, a playoff push isn't inconceivable, and the team still has James Paxton and Felix Hernandez. Adding another piece or two to the puzzle could be just what the team needs to sneak into the postseason.
