Red Sox place Price on DL with elbow inflammation

David Price's frustrating season took another troubling turn Friday, as the Boston Red Sox have placed their embattled left-hander on the 10-day disabled list due to elbow inflammation.

In a corresponding move, the Red Sox recalled left-hander Robby Scott from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Price, who missed the first eight weeks of the season after going down with elbow soreness in spring training, was a boon for Boston's scuffling rotation upon being activated May 29, putting up 3.39 ERA in his first 10 starts off the disabled list, but the former Cy Young award winner got lit up his last time out, allowing six runs - five earned - on seven hits and three walks in five innings Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels.

Rick Porcello will now start Friday at Fenway Park in lieu of Price, who was initially scheduled to get the ball for his club's series opener against the Kansas City Royals.

In March, after Price first complained of elbow soreness, some feared surgery would be necessary, but an encouraging examination by Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Neal ElAttrache dispelled those concerns.

"They were like, 'Your elbow is extremely unique. It's found a way to kind of heal itself,'" Price told Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. "It's pretty neat, bionic elbow."
