Pliskova takes over as world No. 1 after Halep's loss

Simona Halep lost more than just a shot at the Wimbledon semis Tuesday - her defeat by Johanna Konta means Karolina Pliskova is the new world No. 1.

With a win over Konta, Halep would have wrestled the top ranking away from Angelique Kerber, but her loss means Pliskova will take top billing instead.

Pliskova came to Wimbledon as one of the favorites following a grass-court win at Eastbourne right before the season's third Grand Slam. The 25-year-old suffered a shocking second-round defeat to Magdalena Rybarikova, but still sat poised to take over the top ranking if other results fell in her favor.

After Kerber lost to Garbine Muguruza in the round of 16, the No. 1 ranking was Halep's with a win over Konta, but the Romanian lost an intense three-set matchup.

It's the first time in Pliskova's career that she's reached No. 1, moving up two spots from her previous high of No. 3.
