Report: Hardaway signing shocked people within Knicks organization

The New York Knicks sent shock waves through the basketball world when it was revealed just how massive their contract offer was for Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Tim Hardaway Jr.

Those shock waves permeated the Knicks organization, as well, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne.

New York offered Hardaway $71 million over four years, which Atlanta didn't dare match. It's believed that the Hawks were planning to offer the shooting guard $23 million less over the same stretch.

And so, Hardaway re-joins the Knicks on an albatross of a contract that's been widely criticized by people outside of the organization, and apparently within it as well.

The move could have a ripple effect on the roster, as it reportedly prompted "a renewed willingness" for the Knicks to consider dealing All-Star Carmelo Anthony to the Houston Rockets.

Hardaway has career averages of 11 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists over four seasons split between the Hawks and Knicks, who dealt him in 2015 in exchange for the draft pick they used to select Jerian Grant. New York moved Grant last summer in the trade for Derrick Rose, whose rights the team renounced this offseason in order to ink Hardaway.

The club is currently in search of a new general manager to fix, er, run the franchise, and is reportedly in talks with ex-Cleveland Cavaliers GM David Griffin.
