Report: Rangers open to trading Lucroy

Time Heitman / USA TODAY Sports

Jonathan Lucroy's stay in the Lone Star State may wind up being fairly brief.

The Texas Rangers are reportedly open to moving the two-time All-Star by the time the MLB trade deadline comes around, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

The Rangers acquired Lucroy from the Milwaukee Brewers at the 2016 deadline for a package centered around outfield prospect Lewis Brinson, who has since made his MLB debut.

Lucroy is an unrestricted free agent at season's end, making him a viable target for contenders looking to bolster their catching depth. With the Rangers sitting at 40-41 entering Sunday, they are on the cusp of contention.

Since being acquired by the Rangers, Lucroy has hit .269 with 15 home runs, 20 doubles, and 51 RBIs over 107 games.

Lucroy vetoed a trade to the Cleveland Indians in 2016 when the team reportedly wouldn't guarantee him playing time at the position in 2017. Now, he may be on the move once again.

Should the Rangers find a trade partner, Robinson Chirinos would likely get the lion's share of reps behind the plate. Chirinos is a couple of years older than Lucroy, but he's signed through 2018 with a team option for 2019.

It would also open up a spot for Brett Nicholas. In 53 games this season at Triple-A, Nicholas has hit .316 with six home runs.
