Report: Chelsea reaches €33M agreement for Roma's Rudiger

Chelsea has struck a deal with Roma to sign German defender Antonio Rudiger for an initial €33-million fee plus €5 million in bonuses, according to Sky Sport Italia's Gianluca Di Marzio and Fabrizio Romano.

Just hours after Friday's reports that negotiations had begun over Rudiger, news arrived that a deal had been completed.

With the 24-year-old involved in Sunday's Confederations Cup final against Chile, a medical is not expected to happen until next week.

At that point, Rudiger will reportedly sign a five-year contract with the Blues worth £4 million (€4.5 million) a season.

Roma's recent moves do little to back up new sporting director Monchi's claims that the club is not a supermarket. In an interview two weeks ago, the Spaniard said "there is no chance (Rudiger) will leave. Zero."

Problems with UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations have instead forced the club to sell.

The German international is now slated to be Roma's second major summer sale. Monchi already oversaw Mohamed Salah's €42-million departure to Liverpool.

Signed for just €13 million from Stuttgart, Rudiger would net the Giallorossi an estimated €20-million profit.

Prior to Chelsea's attempt to sign Rudiger, there were clear signs that Roma was ready to sacrifice Kostas Manolas. Zenit St. Petersburg had reportedly agreed to sign the Greek defender, only for the deal to fall apart. Whether the 26-year-old will now remain in the Italian capital is unclear.

Of the two defenders, however, Rudiger is the more versatile. He primarily earned his starts as a centre-back, but eventually provided cover for Roma at the right-back position.
