David Griffin may not be out of a job for long.

The executive who recently parted ways with the Cleveland Cavaliers is set to interview for the New York Knicks' team president role, reports ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

The gig opened up Wednesday when Phil Jackson was relieved of his duties as president of basketball operations.

The team is expected to meet with several candidates regarding the vacancy, with general manager Steve Mills and advisor Tim Leiweke leading the search. It's believed Jerry West, who's close to Leiweke, recommended Griffin.

Griffin left the Cavaliers last week following three years as general manager. He helped assemble the club that's made three consecutive Finals appearances, highlighted by a run last year that saw them end the city's 52-year title drought.

The executive reportedly departed after he and team owner Dan Gilbert couldn't agree on the future of the organization, while his demands for a significant raise and more autonomy were denied. He reportedly left behind the plans for the Cavaliers to acquire a superstar via trade.

Griffin said in a statement he's "extremely excited for (his) next challenge in the NBA," and being tasked with fixing the Knicks would be a challenge, to say the least.

The club hasn't made the playoffs in four straight years, while last season was marred by all sorts of on- and off-court dysfunction. A lot of that had to do with the public battle between Jackson and star Carmelo Anthony, so at least that's over and done with.

New York is rumored to also be targeting Oklahoma City Thunder GM Sam Presti and Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri.
