Report: Red Sox trade talks for Frazier intensifying

Stan Szeto / USA TODAY Sports

Less than 24 hours after designating Pablo Sandoval for assignment, the Boston Red Sox may be honing in on their new third baseman.

Talks between the Red Sox and Chicago White Sox involving Todd Frazier have been intensifying, according to Guillermo Celis of ESPN Deportes as translated by theScore.

Frazier, who will be a free agent at the end of this season, has been linked to the Red Sox in recent months and is one of the top third baseman options at the trade deadline, along with Jed Lowrie, Yangervis Solarte, Martin Prado, and Eduardo Nunez.

Despite receiving adequate production from Tzu-Wei Lin and Deven Marrero at third base in Sandoval's absence, the club still sits 28th in OPS (.620) and home runs (7) at the position, while ranking 27th in WAR (-0.1).

Frazier isn't having a great season at the plate, but would provide the club with some much-needed power. The right-handed hitter is slashing .210/.331/.438 with 16 home runs, 14 doubles, and 70 strikeouts in 79 games. He's also coming off a year in which he blasted a career-high 40 homers.

The Red Sox rank fifth-last in the majors in home runs, with only Mookie Betts having hit more than 15.
