Ailing Yankees send Holliday to DL with viral infection

Already beset by injuries to Aaron Hicks and Starlin Castro, the ailing New York Yankees placed veteran slugger Matt Holliday on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday due to a viral infection that has plagued him since the weekend.

According to manager Joe Girardi, who hasn't penciled Holliday into the lineup since Saturday, the 37-year-old told him he feels like "someone zapped me out of all my energy" ahead of Tuesday's loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Holliday, who hasn't recorded a hit since last Wednesday, underwent some blood work that came back fine, Girardi said, but he will now head back to New York for further testing, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled infielder Miguel Andujar, one of their top prospects, from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead of Wednesday's game at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The loss of Holliday, however, is another significant blow for a skidding Yankees team that has dropped 11 of their last 14 games, having managed just a .716 OPS over the last two weeks. Through 68 games this season, Holliday, a seven-time All-Star, is hitting .262/.466/.511 (127 OPS+) with 15 homers and 13 doubles.
