Span walks off Giants after bird-poop shower

Denard Span's worst fear may have come to life on Tuesday, but things ended up all well and good for the 33-year-old San Francisco Giants outfielder, who was responsible for delivering the game-winning walk-off hit in the 14th inning to down the Colorado Rockies 4-3.

But, before he became a hero for a day, Span, who has a phobia of birds, had to put up with a barrage of seagulls dropping poop around him in center field.

"Those birds were dropping stuff around me," he told Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News. "I was like, 'You know what, man? I don't got time for this. I want to go home.' Those birds don't have respect for anybody in the outfield."

Seagulls make regular visits to AT&T Park due to its close proximity to the bay, but the large amount that appeared Tuesday may have arrived in droves thinking the extra-innings contest was over.

Span ended up shaking off his fear and drove in Gorkys Hernandez in the 14th inning to give the Giants a win and push their record to 29-51.
