Report: Swansea nears move for Las Palmas' Roque Mesa

Swansea City is set to make its first splash in the summer transfer market, with reports suggesting the club is in advanced talks to lure crafty midfielder Roque Mesa from the Canary Islands to scenic South Wales.

Paul Clement's lot is close to securing a deal for the 28-year-old Spaniard, with both Sky Sports and BBC Sport reporting Las Palmas is poised to accept an £11-million fee for the player with three years left to run on his current deal with the Spanish minnow.

A late bloomer, Mesa emerged as one of La Liga's most dependable central midfielders this season with Los Amarillos.

Able to play both as a defensive mid or in a more attacking role, Mesa made 35 La Liga appearances split between the two roles last season. With 14 yellow cards on the campaign, it appears as if the robust nature of Premier League football suits the Levante academy product.

For the Swans, a swoop for the mustachioed Mesa would check two boxes: a boost of midfield creativity for a side short on ideas and partial cover for a potential Gylfi Sigurdsson departure. Swansea has already reportedly rejected Everton's £27-million bid for the Icelandic dead-ball specialist.

Should Swansea finalise a move for Mesa in the coming days, the club is likely to then shift its focus to a striker, with club chairman Huw Jenkins admitting as much a week ago. Reports suggest 19-year-old Chelsea stud Tammy Abraham, who scored 23 times last season on loan at Bristol City, is nearing a temporary switch to the Liberty Stadium.
