De Boer is Palace's fifth permanent manager in four years and eighth manager in seven years. According to the Guardian, Palace's chairman, Steve Parish, and the club's major shareholders from the United States of America, David Blitzer and Josh Harris, were impressed by the tactician during a month-long process in which possible successors to Sam Allardyce were scrutinised.

"I am thrilled to be appointed as manager of Crystal Palace Football Club," De Boer said. "It is a great honour to take charge of such an historic club, a club that is known around the world for its hugely proud and passionate fan base. This role is a hugely exciting opportunity for me, and I cannot wait to get started in south London."

De Boer's managerial resume includes Inter and AFC Ajax, where his playing career started in 1998 and where he returned in 2007 as a youth coach. He led the Dutch club's first team to four Eredivisie titles.

Palace posted a tweet in which white smoke is rising from a chimney to signal the news of De Boer's arrival.
