Stanton to defend title in 2017 Home Run Derby

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

The reigning Home Run Derby champion is back and ready to mash.

Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton will defend his title in this year's event, the league announced Sunday. He is the first player to officially commit.

The hulking slugger won the derby last season when he hit 20 home runs in the final round, defeating Todd Frazier - the 2015 champion - who hit 13.

Coincidentally, Stanton hit his 20th home run of the regular season Sunday, making him the 11th player in league history to hit 20 or more in each of their first eight seasons.
