Report: Griffin opts out of contract to become UFA
Let free agency begin.
Blake Griffin has opted out of the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers to become an unrestricted free agent, sources told The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Griffin's move is expected to be accompanied imminently by the same decision from teammate Chris Paul, putting two of the top players in Clippers history on the open market this summer. Rumors have been rife for some time that the franchise could be in for a major shakeup, something clearly the case if Griffin or Paul - or both - sign elsewhere.
Griffin will still count as a $29.7 million cap hold against the Clippers, according to The Vertical's Bobby Marks. That will be released if Griffin signs with another team.
Outside of Los Angeles, it is expected teams such as the Boston Celtics and his hometown Oklahoma City Thunder would have interest in Griffin.
