The Boston Red Sox continue their desperate search for a third baseman.

The Red Sox announced Friday that the team has signed free agent Jhonny Peralta to a minor-league deal. Peralta will report to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.

Peralta, 35, was released by the St. Louis Cardinals on June 13 after struggling at the plate through the first two-plus months of the season. He batted .204 with zero extra-base hits over 58 plate appearances this season.

The veteran infielder was in the final year of his contract with the Cardinals. After two productive seasons to kick off his tenure in St. Louis, Peralta was sidelined by injuries for about half of 2016, and he didn't quite look the same this season.

The Red Sox still have had a litany of issues at third base. Marco Hernandez is the only player to spend time at the hot corner for the Red Sox this season to have an on-base percentage at .300. Meanwhile, Pablo Sandoval's troubles have been highly publicized.

When, or if, Peralta makes his MLB debut with the Red Sox remains to be seen.
