Pedroia taken to hospital for X-rays after taking pitch to his back

Boston's victory Sunday night could be costly.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was hit in the back by a pitch in the seventh inning and was taken to a local Houston hospital after his team's 6-5 win over the Astros, according to ESPN.

"The pitch hit in the left lat area, left ribcage," manager John Farrell said. "It continued to swell and tighten up. He was losing a lot of range of motion with the left arm so we had to get him off his feet. We'll have a better read once he goes through the exam here at the local hospital."

Pedroia was visibly displeased after taking James Hoyt's pitch in the back, and was eventually removed from the game. He was the second straight Red Sox hitter to take a pitch, after Hoyt hit Mookie Betts.

Warnings were issued to both teams as Pedroia had some choice words for Hoyt.

Pedroia is hitting .296/.368/.376 on the season with two home runs and 25 RBIs.
