Former UFC heavyweight Tim Hague died on Sunday as a result of brain injuries sustained in a boxing match in Edmonton, Alberta, according to a statement from his family posted to Facebook and confirmation from The Canadian Press.

Hague's sister Jackie Neil wrote the following statement:

It is with incredible sadness, sorrow, and heartbreak to report that Tim has passed away today. He was surrounded by family, listening to his favorite songs. We will miss him with so greatly. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.

Hague was 33 years old.

After being knocked out by Adam Braidwood on Friday, Hague was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery to relieve pressure caused by bleeding in his brain. He remained in a coma until his death Sunday.

"The Thrashing Machine" rose to prominence as a UFC fighter during a brief stretch with the promotion from 2009-11. Though the Canadian managed just one win in five appearances, that lone victory was a shocking first-round submission victory over MMA and kickboxing veteran Pat Barry.

Hague ended his professional career with a 21-13 record before moving on to boxing in 2016.
