Report: Yankees, Red Sox have interest in Marlins' Prado

With Major League Baseball's trade deadline about a month away, rumors have begun to circulate and one name of interest that arose on Wednesday is Miami Marlins third baseman Martin Prado.

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are showing interest in Prado, a high-ranking official with direct knowledge of the preliminary talks tells Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Both the Yankees and Red Sox - who are competing with one another for top spot in the American League East - have a glaring need at third, which Prado and his lifetime .292 average could fill.

After trading Travis Shaw to the Milwaukee Brewers during the offseason, the Red Sox haven't received much production from third thanks to the continued struggles of Pablo Sandoval.

Seven different Red Sox third basemen have combined to hit .200/.251/.311 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs.

PLAYER PA HR RBI OPS
Pablo Sandoval 97 4 11 .603
Deven Marrero 97 3 12 .503
Josh Rutledge 64 0 5 .607
Marco Hernandez 27 0 1 .556
Brock Holt 4 0 0 .250
Tzu-Wei Lin 3 0 0 .667
Steve Selsky 1 0 0 .000

In New York, things have been better at third, but they still haven't been great.

Chase Headley has logged the majority of the playing time at the position, and while his .717 OPS isn't terrible, the Yankees obviously want to see more from the position.

Top prospect Gleyber Torres appeared to be in line for a promotion to play the spot before a UCL tear in his left elbow ended his year.

Prado has been limited to just 21 games this season because of a hamstring injury. In those games, he's only managed an OPS of .696, his lowest since 2011.

Over the course of his 12-year career, the 33-year-old Venezuelan owns a slash line of .292/.341/.423 with 97 home runs and 573 RBIs across 5,332 plate appearances.

Prado is due $28.5 million over two years after the completion of the 2017 season.
