Mayfield gets alcohol education, community service for February arrest

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield will participate in alcohol education classes and perform 35 hours of community service as discipline for his alcohol-related arrest in February, the school announced Thursday.

Mayfield was charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and fleeing and resisting arrest following an altercation with police in Fayetteville, Ark. Footage of his arrest showed Mayfield getting tackled by police and falling face-first into a concrete wall after trying to run from authorities.

"Baker has expressed regret for his actions and backed up his apology by being a model leader in our program," new head coach Lincoln Riley said in a statement. "He has learned from his mistake and will continue to grow from it. The coaching staff and team has every confidence in him going forward."

Mayfield threw for 3,965 yards with 40 touchdowns and eight interceptions last year, and is among the preseason favorites to capture the Heisman Trophy as a senior.

The Sooners will face UTEP to start the season Sept. 2, and Thursday's announcement suggested Mayfield won't be suspended for the contest.
