Orgeron labeled 'Paranoid Ed' amid satellite camp fiasco

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

A day after news came out that LSU pressured Division III school Belhaven into cancelling a satellite camp in Louisiana because of Texas' expected presence, Belhaven head coach Hal Mumme ripped into the Tigers' Ed Orgeron.

"It was for sure pressure from LSU," Mumme said on AM 1300 The Zone in Austin, Texas on Wednesday, referring to why the showcase was cancelled, according to Chip Brown of Horns Digest. "I call him Paranoid Ed."

LSU and Texas were the two noteworthy schools set to attend the event, but Houston, Cornell, and of course, Belhaven were also slated to appear. The cancellation cost the small-budget program about $5,000, with facilities and administrative costs accounting for much of the expenses.

It was the third satellite camp in Louisiana cancelled in recent weeks, allegedly due to political pressure from LSU. The Tigers want to keep Texas and other recruiting competitors out of their state, but by doing so are preventing schools like Belhaven from looking at players good enough to play for them, but not necessarily of the quality to play for the likes of LSU.

"If you are the head coach at LSU, you should want the other kids in your state to have an opportunity," Mumme told Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated on Tuesday. "Ed needs to think about those kids that aren't going to get a scholarship to LSU. I've been in the SEC as the coach of the (flagship) university of the state. You have show respect to those other kids as well."

Upon earning the LSU coaching job on a full-time basis, Orgeron vowed to build recruiting fences around Louisiana.

Mumme, 65, was head coach of Kentucky from 1997-2000. He's been with Belhaven for three years.
