Murphy downplays heated exchange with 2nd-base ump

Brad Mills / USA TODAY Sports

Daniel Murphy was only trying to tell second-base umpire Alan Porter he made for a better door than a window.

In the second inning of Tuesday's contest between the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves, Murphy and Porter were seen having a spirited discussion about something on the field. Porter, who didn't look thrilled about the discussion at all, then appeared to utter an F-bomb as he turned around.

While the two looked to be engaged in a verbal tussle, Murphy explained postgame he was simply trying to get a better line of sight to the play, though the pair eventually found a solution that benefited both parties.

"Alan and I talked," Murphy said Tuesday, according to Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post. "I think we both understand we've got a job to do, and we were both able to discuss and work through that. By the end of the game, there were no problems whatsoever. I don't foresee there being any problems in the future, either."

Whatever Murphy did to clear his line of sight worked, as the infielder recorded six defensive assists on the night - his second-most in a game this season - and turned two double plays.
