Silver: Rest of NBA needs to catch up with Warriors

People won't stop talking about the lack of parity in the National Basketball Association any time soon, especially since there's no apparent end in sight to the newly crowned NBA champion Golden State Warriors' reign of dominance.

Instead of conjuring up a way to bring Golden State down to the rest of the league's level, commissioner Adam Silver wants to figure out how the 29 other teams can rise to the challenge and create competition.

"Rather than focusing on the top of the league, we should be focusing on the rest of the league," Silver told The Washington Post's Adam Kilgore ahead of Game 4 of The Finals. "Rather than talking about how to break up or knock down a championship-caliber team, my focus should be on how we do a better job developing more great players in this league."

Silver noted that the Warriors hit the jackpot through the draft by selecting core pieces Stephen Curry (No. 7), Klay Thompson (No. 11), and Draymond Green (No. 35). The organization has also been smart with its money, creating the opportunity to sign a talent like four-time scoring champion Kevin Durant last summer.

"And yes, an incredible free agent was added to that squad," Silver said. "All the focus seems to be on, 'They're too good' as opposed to, 'What is it we should be doing to create more great teams in this league?' That's what my response is. ...

"Let's create more great teams, rather than completely focus on one incredible team and whether that's seemingly unfair to the other team. I think it's the nature of competition. Ultimately, it's about raising the bar for all the teams in this league and celebrating excellence."

The Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers had a combined postseason record of 24-1 entering their third straight Finals meeting, which Golden State took Monday night in Game 5 at Oracle Arena.
