Colorado orders MacIntyre to donate $100K to domestic violence programs

University of Colorado head coach Mike MacIntyre will donate $100,000 to domestic violence organizations as a result of the way he handled allegations against an assistant, the Colorado Board of Regents announced Monday, according to Elizabeth Hernandez of the DailyCamera.

In addition to MacIntyre's donation, athletic director Rick George is required to contribute $100,000 as well, and chancellor Phil DiStefano will be suspended for 10 days.

The punishment followed an investigation into the school's handling of domestic violence allegations against ex-assistant Joe Tumpkin. The investigation noted there was no ill intent by the staff members, but "mistakes were made."

MacIntyre permitted Joe Tumpkin to call the defensive plays in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29, despite learning of allegations of domestic violence against him on Dec. 9. MacIntyre eventually informed the athletic director and chancellor, but Tumpkin wasn't suspended until Jan. 6. He resigned later that month.

Tumpkin's ex-girlfriend left a voicemail for MacIntyre on Dec. 15 informing him she was filing for a restraining order, but the school claims it didn't find out about that until Jan. 6, according to Hernandez.
