Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver and Indiana star James Hardy has been found dead, the Allen County Coroner's Office confirmed Thursday.

The 31-year-old's body was recovered in the Maumee River, which runs from Indiana to Ohio and Lake Erie in Michigan. His cause and manner of death is under investigation.

Hardy enjoyed a standout three-year career with the Hoosiers from 2005-07, posting 2,740 yards and 36 touchdowns. He remains the program's all-time leading receiver in catches, yards, and touchdowns.

Hardy was selected in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Bills, but managed just 10 receptions in 16 games before being released. He signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2011, but was released without playing a game.

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of James Hardy today," the Bills said in a statement. "We send our condolences to the Hardy family as they deal with this tragic loss."

In addition to his status as a star wideout at Indiana, Hardy played two seasons on the school's basketball team.
