Garbine Muguruza meant no harm when she accidentally called the Wimbledon runner-up, 37-year-old Venus Williams, a little bit old following Saturday's championship match.

"I grew up watching her play," the 23-year-old Muguruza said in the trophy ceremony, before suddenly realizing what she had just implied about her opponent.

"Sorry," she quickly added, as the crowd broke out in laughter.

Muguruza captured her first Wimbledon title and second career major with a 7-5, 6-0 triumph over Williams. She became the first player to beat both Williams sisters - Serena and Venus - in a Grand Slam final, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Venus, for her part, didn't seem bothered by the comment or the result. Though the loss obviously stung, the seven-time Grand Slam champion said upon accepting the runner-up trophy that she expects to have "more opportunities" to add to her major title collection.
