Hitting a grand slam at the top of McCutchen's bucket list

Andrew McCutchen has hit a lot of home runs over his career. He's hit 184 over parts of nine professional seasons, to be exact.

But one thing the Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder has never done is hit a grand slam. He told Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune that it's at the top of his baseball bucket list and thought he finally had it in the sixth inning of Friday's game against the New York Mets.

"Bases loaded, one out … I was like, 'Here it is,'" McCutchen said. "I got a slider and I hit it good, but I didn't hit it good enough. (Jay Bruce) caught it at the warning track. Sac fly."

McCutchen has come to the plate 89 times with the bases loaded in his career and managed 19 hits, with only four having gone for extra bases (three doubles, one triple). He's walked 10 times and hit eight sacrifice flies. He's even been hit by two pitches.

And yet he's never gone yard with the bases juiced.

He added that his other goal is to rob a batter of a home run with a circus catch. McCutchen almost got his wish the following day when the aforementioned Bruce hit a home run in the third inning.

"I got close (on Saturday)," McCutchen said. "I was right there. But, that's another one of those things that's like a grab-it-out-of-a-hat-type deal. It just kind of happens."

Since being moved to the six-hole in the Pirates' lineup on May 26, McCutchen is hitting .387 with a trio of long balls. Maybe it's only a matter of time until he locks into his wish.
