Dufner sets 36-hole scoring record at the Memorial after bogey-free 65

After his opening-round 65 on Thursday, Jason Dufner said he's been working on his breathing and heart rate while performing his pre-shot routine. Judging by that performance and the next day's results, the tactic is working.

Dufner set a new 36-hole record at the Memorial Tournament after his bogey-free 65, which brought him to 14-under par. The 2013 PGA champion made five birdies Friday, as well as an eagle at the par-4 18th, holing his 176-yard approach shot from the fairway.

"I need to just keep playing well," Dufner told pgatour.com after Friday's round. "I know that's a cliche and all that, but I feel pretty comfortable out here on the PGA Tour."

The previous 36-hole tournament scoring record was 13-under, set by Scott Hoch in 1987 and matched by Rickie Fowler in 2010.

Dufner is hoping for a better fate over the weekend than Fowler and Hoch, who both failed to lift the trophy Sunday after their stellar starts.

"I been in leads a lot on the weekend, so I just need to get off to a nice start, hit some greens, maybe roll in a few putts early," said Dufner.
