Jets trade former 1st-rounder Calvin Pryor to Browns for Demario Davis

The New York Jets have traded safety Calvin Pryor to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for linebacker Demario Davis, the team announced Thursday.

"Calvin is a young, experienced safety that has upside," said executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown. "We are pleased to be able to add him to our defensive back room and just like every player we acquire, we expect him to come in with a hard-working mindset ready to compete.

"Demario is a guy that we developed the utmost respect for in his time with our team, not only as a professional but also as a person. We appreciate all he did for our organization in his time in Cleveland."

There are no picks involved in the trade, reports Albert Breer of MMQB.com.

Pryor, a first-round pick in 2014, was made expendable after the Jets selected safeties Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye in the first two rounds of this year's draft. The Jets were planning to release him prior to the trade, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Davis was originally drafted by the Jets in 2012 and spent four seasons in New York before joining Cleveland in free agency prior to last season.

Pryor started 38 games (and appeared in 44) over his first three NFL seasons. However, his poor coverage skills never improved and his decent run defense ability wasn't enough to offset the liability he was in the passing game.

It's another low risk, high reward move by the newly savvy Browns. Pryor is still a young player with upside and Davis was unremarkable in his first season with the Browns. Pryor will likely compete for a starting role at strong safety, a position at which Cleveland sorely needs competition.
