Athletics trade Plouffe to Rays

The Oakland Athletics traded third baseman Trevor Plouffe and cash to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Plouffe, who was designated for assignment earlier this week, hit .214/.276/.357 with seven home runs, five doubles, and 58 strikeouts in 58 games for the Athletics.

The 31-year-old is expected to join the Rays on Monday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

While Plouffe has served primarily as a third baseman during his eight-year career, he does have experience at first base and could be used as part of a platoon with Logan Morrison against left-handed pitching. Plouffe is hitting .294/.357/.373 against lefties this season compared to .183/.245/.351 against right-handers.
