Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez was hospitalized overnight after leaving Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with an undisclosed illness, manager Brad Ausmus told MLB Network Radio on Friday.

Ausmus referred to Martinez's ailment on the radio program as "more scary" than a general baseball injury.

In the seventh inning against the Rays, Martinez reached first base safely due to a throwing error by Daniel Robertson that also scored Ian Kinsler. However, Martinez immediately left the game after the play and was replaced by pinch runner Dixon Machado.

"He's not feeling well," Ausmus said after Thursday's game, according to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News. "He got cold sweats, dizzy, and his heart was racing.

"It got to a point where he felt he couldn't go."
