The inevitable union is one step closer.

The Los Angeles Lakers have scheduled a workout with UCLA phenom Lonzo Ball for June 7, sources told Shams Charania of The Vertical.

Joining the hometown Lakers is the dream of both Lonzo and his father LaVar. The highly publicized family from Chino Hills has essentially plotted such a move since he declared for the draft after leading the nation in assists as a freshman.

Adding a marketable star like Ball also holds tremendous marketing potential for a Lakers organization bereft of premium talent. None of their existing prospects have been able to capitalize on the absence of Kobe Bryant to become the face of the franchise. Ball has both the game and the persona to become the next great Laker.

To that end, Ball's camp "politely" declined to meet with the Boston Celtics, who hold the No. 1 pick courtesy of the Brooklyn Nets. That paves the way for the Celtics to pick point guard Markelle Fultz, thus allowing Ball to slide down to the Lakers.

Ball is said to be a gifted playmaker with tremendous court vision and a funky but accurate jumper. He averaged 14.6 points, 7.6 assists, six rebounds, and 1.8 steals as a freshman while shooting 55.1 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from deep.
