Report: LaVar Ball's greed cost Lonzo $10M shoe deal

Lonzo Ball may have missed out on a large sneaker deal thanks to his father, LaVar.

The elder Ball declared in March that it would take an endorsement deal worth $1 billion to win over his son, which prompted a Nike exec to call LaVar "the worst thing to happen to basketball in the last hundred years."

Moreover, the comments seemed to scare off Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour, which were planning to offer the former UCLA standout a substantial first shoe deal, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell.

"The original deals that Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour were going to offer Lonzo Ball would be five years (at) $10 million - $2 million a year," Rovell said on "The Dan Patrick Show."

Rovell also speculated that the 6-foot-6 guard could've fetched double the original figure from the athletic footwear and apparel giants when the Los Angeles Lakers landed the No. 2 pick in the draft, as the large-market team is believed to be interested in selecting Lonzo.

"After the Lakers thing goes down and you have the opinion that the perfect scenario is going to unfold, the new deal might be five years, $20 million," Rovell said.

Instead, the Balls released Lonzo's signature shoe under their own Big Baller Brand. Despite modest sales of the "ZO2 Prime," which retails for $495 a pop, LaVar tripled his asking price to $3 billion.
