Report: Zaire heading to Florida; awaiting SEC rule change

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Six months after receiving his release from Notre Dame, it appears Malik Zaire has made a decision on where he'll play in 2017, though he's waiting on a rule change.

According to Alex Wilcox of WNDU-TV, Zaire will be heading to Gainesville next season to play for the Florida Gators, but is waiting for the SEC to change its graduate transfer restrictions.

The Gators were hurt by SEC bylaw 14.1.15.3 when they grabbed Mason Halter and Anthony Harrell in 2015 as transfers. Both fell short of academic requirements, penalizing the Gators for three years after their enrollment.

The hot topic is expected to be addressed this week at the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla., and if the rules are indeed changed, the Notre Dame grad would be immediately eligible to play for the Gators.
